Here's my story of how a cut cost me $43,000. I received this cut from a deliberate headbutt in my eighth professional fight.

The doctor who stitched me up after the fight, didn’t do the best job. There were a few fighters who were also cut on the show and as he was the only doctor sewing up the lacerations, I think he was rushed, so he didn’t do a great job.

Six weeks later at training camp for my next fight which was scheduled for eight weeks later...

Running, bag work, pad work, skipping, shadow boxing, strength and conditioning are all important aspects of a boxer's training. However, nothing quite simulates a real boxing match like sparring. To add to that, nothing will simulate competition quite like hard sparring, after all your opponent on the night will be throwing punches as hard as they possibly can and trying to score a knockout. Therefore, it makes sense to practice this is in the gym, no?

My answer would in fact be no, though...

From an early age it is important for children to have some interests and develop lifestyle habits they will carry with them for the rest of their life. Preferably something that will get them active, particularly in todays society of computer games, YouTube and social media. Poor food choices are often associated with this lifestyle too, so before you know it, it is quite common for children to settle straight into their computer, iPad or TV with a collection of chips, sweets and a can of...

Most fighters will agree that being hit in the body hard is often worse than being hit in the head.

When you get hit clean it really sucks all the oxygen out of your full body, you feel sick and suffocated at the same time. It's not a nice feeling.

I used to practice throwing and landing the body shot all of the time when I was fighting, in shadow boxing, on the backs, and in sparring.

A great way to land that body shot is by changing the angle and with...

The speed bag/speedball has been around since my grandad was a little boy. visually the most impressive piece of equipment in a boxing gym. We've seen fighters over the years blasting the ball doing tricks, going really fast, even looking away from the ball while they hitting it.

For me, some of the best are Floyd Mayweather Lomachenko and Lornarez you will see videos of them hitt the bag it's very impressive.

The main benefits of hitting this thing are hand and eye coordination, which...

After recently finding myself ill and in hospital, I promised myself that I would do what I’ve been putting off for a while - I wanted to step back into coaching but this time through fitness and boxing. As a former SFA football coach I have always loved coaching and supporting peoples’ development and helping them to reach their goals. Whilst my route in life took me away from being a coach, my passion for coaching & fitness always remained.

I love boxing and everything the...

After one of the worst recessions in history that lasted from November 2007 to May 2016, America has seen a steady increase in Jobs and opportunities –especially for young people.

Speaking of opportunities, I’m glad to see that there are a lot more opportunities open to young people in the sport and fitness industry. Box N’ Burn has also seen steady growth as more young people are taking on boxing certification courses that we offer.

I am now a proud husband and...

When I began coaching, my experience was mostly working with people who wanted to compete in combat sports, or with those already competing as amateur athletes. As we added more classes to our gym’s timetable, I met people who wanted to use martial arts training to improve personal fitness, rather than fighting in the ring or cage.

I think the difference between these two groups is clear. Competitive combat athletes expect the grind of a training camp, hard sparring and sometimes being...

Unfortunately, in 2015 at the age of 30 I was involved in a serious car accident that left me with a broken wrist, torn meniscus in my knee, various torn ligaments in my foot and a bunch of deep gashes and cuts all over my body. Being an extremely active person, this accident left me feeling depressed, immobile and feeling like my world was caving in, but what kept me going were my dad’s encouraging words “You have to make your body strong enough to take what life’s going to...
